Taiwan’s Summer Camp for MIT Students Initiated by Professor Ying Li
Dr. Ying Li (LIDS/MIT, PhD 1994), Professor of Electrical Engineering at Yuan Ze University (YZU) in Taiwan, initiated a summer camp for MIT students at YZU in 2008. The camp was so successful that it has lasted for the past decade in a row. The camp, called the MIT-YZU Technology, Culture and English Summer Camp (or MY Camp), brings MIT students to Taiwan for new cultural experiences by living and working together with Taiwanese students. In this camp, MIT students teach high-school and university students from Taiwan and abroad with YZU students as their teaching assistants. The success of MY camp is attributed to the strong commitment and persistent effort of Sean Gilbert at the MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives (MISTI) and the staff members of the Teaching Excellence Center (TEC) at YZU.
After receiving her PhD from MIT, Dr. Li joined YZU in 1994. YZU is one of the very best private universities in Taiwan. Dr. Li has served as Chair of the Department of Communications Engineering and Dean of Student Affairs at YZU. Her recent research activities have focused on the construction of sequences and arrays with orthogonality properties and small alphabets. Dr. Li maintains a special connection with MIT through MY Camp, which is held every July at the YZU campus.
